Already, Still y Yet

I have already finished (ya he acabado)
I already knew that (ya sabía eso)
Have you already finished? (¿Ya has acabado?) → Sorpresa

STILL (= todavía/aún)

He still works in a bank (él todavía trabaja en un banco)

Pero después del verbo to be
I am still waiting for a reply to my letter (todavía estoy esperando una respuesta a mi carta)

Con el verbo have y have got la posición de still cambia.
Tengo tu dirección todavía → I still have your address / I have still got your address.

Indica impaciencia
I still have not found that book (todavía no he encontrado ese libro)

Is it still raining? (¿está lloviendo todavía ?)
Are they still friends? (¿son amigos todavía?
Do you still live in the UK?

I haven’t finished yet (todavía no he terminado)

Compara:
I haven’t finished reading the book yet (No he terminado de leer el libro todavía)
I still haven’t finished reading the book (No he terminado de leer el libro todavía) → impaciencia

→ En oraciones interrogativas significa "ya".
Have you finished yet? (¿Has terminado ya?)

Compara:
Have you finished yet? (¿Has terminado ya?)
Have you already finished? (¿Ya has terminado?) → Sorpresa

Aquí os dejamos un divertido resumen :)

EJERCICIO

They are on holiday (still)……………………………………….
We haven’t visited the British museum (yet)…………………..
She hasn’t called (still)…………………………………………..
Have they arrived (yet)…………………………………………..
He smokes a lot (still)………………………………………….

Question Tags

Ejemplo:
You are English aren’t you? ¿Eres inglés no?

Ejemplos:
You will be 30 next year won’t you?
Cumplirás 30 años el año que viene no?
He has been living in London for 3 years hasn’t he?
Lleva 3 años viviendo en Londres no?

Para el presente y pasado simple se usan do/does/did

Ejemplos:
You went to Alicante last week didn’t you? Fuiste a Alicante la semana pasado no?
You work in bank don’t you?

Ejemplos:
You didn’t enjoy the concert did you? No disfrutaste el concierto verdad?
You haven’t finished have you? No has terminado verdad?

Consejos:

Ejemplo:
Let’s go to the cinema shall we? Vamos al cine?

  • Con imperatives se usa will you

Ejemplo:
Be quiet will you? Callate por favour

  • Con el verbo to be se dice aren’t I en primera persona en vez de am I not

Ejemplo:
am late aren’t I Llego tarde no?

  1. Peter doesn’t like the beach………………….?
  2. You are French……………………………….?
  3. He won’t be late………………………………?
  4. The film wasn’t very good……………………?
  5. You can swim…………………………………?

Relative clauses con where, whose, whom, when, why

1. DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES con: whose, where, when, why/that, whom

Ejemplo 1
I’ve got a friend. His brother is an actor (tengo un amigo. Su hermano es actor)
I’ve got a friend whose brother is an actor (tengo un amigo cuyo hermano es actor)
I’ve got a friend brother is an actor X

Ejemplo 2
I saw the man. His dog had died (ví al hombre. Su perro había muerto)
I saw the man whose dog had died (ví al hombre cuyo perro había muerto)
I saw the man dog had died X

WHERE (=donde, en el que, en la que, en los que, en las que)
Usamos where para hacer referencia a lugares.

Ejemplo 1
I stayed at a hotel. It was very small (me alojé en un hotel. Era muy pequeño)
The hotel where we stayed was very small (el hotel donde me alojé era muy pequeño)
The hotel we stayed AT was very small
The hotel we stayed was very small X

Ejemplo 2
The house was very big. We lived there (la casa era muy grande. Nosotros vivíamos allí)
The house where we lived was very big (la casa donde vivíamos era muy grande)
The house we lived IN was very big
The house we lived was very big X

WHEN (=cuando)
Usamos when para referirnos a nociones temporales. Se puede omitir.

Ejemplo
That was just the moment when we arrived (ese fue justo el momento cuando llegamos)
That was just the moment we arrived

Ejemplo
Is there a reason why / that you don’t want to come to the party?
Is there a reason you don’t want to come to the party?

WHOM

The person who I wanted to see was French = The person whom I wanted to see was French

(esa es la mujer con la que él se casó)
That is the woman who he married = that is the woman whom he married

2. NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES con: whose, where, when, whom

Tine Harries, whose brother is the actor Paul Harris, is a good friend of mine

We visited a town called Maintown, where we had lunch in an Italian restaurant

Observa:
Cenar con alguien → to have dinner with somebody
Ayer cené con una chico  → I had dinner with a guy yesterday

Frase 1: Ayer cené con un chico → I had dinner with a guy yesterday
Frase 2: El chico vive en Londres → The guy lives in London

  • Ejemplo defining 1
1. I had dinner with a guy yesterday (ayer cené con un chico)
2.The guy lives in London (el chico vive en Londres)
Frase de relativo: The guy with whom I had dinner yesterday lives in London (El chico con el que cené ayer vive en Londres)

  • Ejemplo defining 2
1. That is the town (ese es el pueblo)
2. He was born in that town  (él nació en ese pueblo)
Frase de relativo: That is the town in which he was born (ese es el pueblo en el que él nació)

  • Ejemplo non-defining 1
1. We went on holiday with Mr and Mrs Brown (nosotros nos fuimos de vacaciones con el señor y la señor Brown)
2. Mr and Mrs Brown live in London (el señor y la señor Brown viven en Londres)
Frase de relativo: Mr and Mrs Brown, with whom we went on holiday, live in London (el señor y la señor Brown, con los que nos fuimos de vacaciones, viven en Londres)

  • Ejemplo non-defining 2
1. The meeting room was not really big (la sala de reuniones no era muy grande)
2. The conference was held in the meeting room (la conferencia tuvo lugar en la sala de reuniones)
Frase de relativo: The meeting room, in which the conference was held, was not really big (la sala de reuniones, en la cual se celebró la conferencia, no era muy grande)

¡Cuidado!
Defining relative clauses: Nunca podemos poner una preposición delante del relativo that
That is the town in that he was born
The guy with that I had dinner yesterday lives in London

Mr and Mrs Brown, with that we went on holiday, live in London
The meeting room, in that the conference was held, was not really big

REGISTRO INFORMAL

Defining relative clauses

The guy with whom I had dinner yesterday lives in London
→ The guy I had dinner with yesterday lives in London

That is the town in which he was born
→ That’s the town he was born in.

Non-defining relative clauses

Mr and Mrs Brown, with whom we went on holiday, live in London
→ Mr and Mrs Brown, who we went on holiday with, live in London
Mr and Mrs Brown, we went on holiday with, live in London

The meeting room, in which the conference was held, was not really big
→ The meeting room, which the conference was held in, was not really big
The meeting room, the conference was held in, was not really big

OTRAS EXPRESIONES
Otras expresiones como some of / many of / much of / none of / all of se utilizan con los relativos which y whom.

My friends, some of whom you’ve met before, will be at the party.

He gave me a lot of advice, much of which was very useful.

1. Oración principal:  The guy lives in London (el chico vive en Londres)
2. Oración secundaria: I had dinner with that guy yesterday (ayer cené con ese chico)

2. Oración secundaria: The woman works in a bank (la mujer trabaja en un banco)
Frase de relativo: He married a woman who works in a bank.

jQuery
1. This is my brother Jake, about whom you have heard so much.
Registro informal: .

2. That is the shop from which I got my dress.
Registro informal: .

3.- Is that the girl next to whom you always sit?
Registro informal: ?

4. This is the school I used to go to.
Registro formal: .

5. This is the man to whom my friend is married.
Registro informal: .

6. The tennis club is the only club I am a member of.
Registro formal: .

7. This is the box in which we should put the biscuits.

Non-defining relative clauses

NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES (explicativas)

My neighbour, who is French, is very rich (mi vecino, que es Francés, es rico)

Si quitamos la non-definig relative clause (,who is French,) podríamos entender la frase perfectamente (my neighbour is rich).

Compara:
The man who I told you about is very friendly (el hombre del que te hablé es muy simpático) → Esta frase contiene un relative clause que no se puede omitir porque es importante para la comprensión de toda la frase. Estamos ante una defining relative clause

My teacher, who has been working at the same school for 5 years, is getting married on Saturday(mi profesor, que lleva 5 años trabajando en la misma escuela, se casa el sábado) → En esta frase la información who has been working at the same school for 5 years  no es fundamental para entender la frase.

WHO → para hacer referencia a personas
My sister, who works in a bank, is moving house next week (mi hermana, que trabaja en un banco, se muda la semana que viene)

WHICH → para hacer referencia a cosas
The building, which is very old, costs a lot of money (el edificio, que es muy antiguo, cuesta mucho dinero)

THAT → nunca usamos that en las non-defining
The building, that is very old, costs a lot of money

WHO y WHICH: SUJETO U OBJETO DE UNA NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE

1. Función de sujeto
Alison's sister, who is 19, has just passed her driving test (la hermana de Alison, que tiene 19 años, acaba de aprobar el examen de conducir)

The buildingwhich is very old, costs a lot of money (el edificio, que es muy antiguo, cuesta mucho dinero)

Alison's sisteris 19
Sujetopredicado
The buildingis very old
Sujetopredicado

Alison's sister, who is 19, has just passed her driving test.

2. Función de objeto
She gave me the money, which I put in my purse (ella me dió el dinero, el cual me guardé en la cartera)

Sarah Robbins, who you met last week, will be at the party (Sara Robbins, a quien conociste la semana pasada, estará en la fiesta)

Iputthe moneyin my purse
Sujetoverboobjeto
YoumetSarah Robbinslast week
Sujetoverboobjeto

She gave me the money, which I put in my purse.

¡Importante!

Sarah Robbinswhom you met last week, will be at the party (Sara Robbins, a quien conociste la semana pasada, estará en la fiesta)

My uncle John, who lives in Manchester, is coming to visit me next week
My uncle John, lives in Manchester, is coming to visit me next week X

Sarah Robbins, who you met last week, will be at the party
Sarah Robbins, who you met last week, will be at the party X
