I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they)

Importante: El verbo to be es irregular y no sigue estas reglas cuando lo conjugamos en pasado simple.

AFIRMATIVAS

work → worked         watch → watched          clean → cleaned

I brush my hair everyday. This morning I brushed my hair
(me cepillo el pelo todos los días. Esta mañana me cepillé el pelo)

I watched TV, you watched TV, he watched TV, she watched TV, we watched TV, they watched TV

go → went          see →  saw          have → had

I go to school everyday. Yesterday I went to school
(voy al colegio todos los días. Ayer fui al colegio)

I went, you went, he went, she went, we went, they went

NEGATIVAS

Regulares:     work → didn't work         watch → didn't watch          clean → didn't clean
Irregulares:   go → didn't go                 see →  didn't see                  have → didn't have

I didn't work, you didn't work, he didn't work, she didn't work, we didn't work, they didn't work
I didn't go, you didn't go, he didn't go, she didn't go, we didn't go, they didn't go

This morning I didn't brush my hair (esta mañana no me cepillé el pelo)
This morning I didn't brushed my hair

I didn't go to school yesterday (ayer no fui al colegio)
I didn't went to school yesterday

INTERROGATIVAS
Las oraciones interrogativas se formarán así: Did + sujeto + verbo en infinitivo sin to

Did you work? Did you go?
Yes, I did
No, I didn't

Did he work? Did he go?
Yes, he did
No, he didn't

Did she work? Did she go?
Yes, she did
No, she didn't

Did they work? Did they go?
Yes, they did
No, they didn't

Did you watch TV yesterday? (¿Viste la televisión ayer?)
Did you watched TV yesterday?

Did you go to school yesterday? (¿Fuiste a la escuela ayer?)
Did you went to school yesterday?

USOS

We ate in a restaurant yesterday (comimos en un restaurante ayer)
I painted the living room last weekend (pinte el salón el fin de semana pasado)
He finished the homework before going to bed.

I got up at 8 o’clock. I had breakfast. Then I got dressed. Later I went into town. I met a friend and we had coffee.
(Me levanté a las 8. Desayuné. Después me vestí.

When I was a teenager I went to a lot of concerts (cuando era adolescente iba a conciertos con mis amigos)

I really enjoyed myself when I was a teenager (me lo pasaba muy bien cuando era adolescente)

When I was at university I shared a house with my friends (cuando estaba en la Universidad vivía en una casa con mis amigos)

When - cuando
Yesterday – ayer
The day before yesterday - anteayer
Last week / month / year / Monday– la semana pasada / el mes pasado / el año pasado / el lunes pasado
Last night -anoche
Three hours / days ago - hace tres horas / días
In 1999 – en 1999
In January – en enero
Last night - anoche

Nota
También se puede usar used to para hablar de hábitos o situaciones en el pasado)

*SPELLING

wash   washed          finish  finished               talk  talked

    like  liked                live  lived

study → studied          carry → carried              try →  tried

stop  → stopped          plan  planned    BUT        play → played           show  showed

¡Cuidado!

Prefer  preferred

Inglés – state verbs

Por ejemplo: Podemos decir I believe you are right (creo que tienes razón)  pero no I'm believing you are right (estoy creyendo que tienes razón)Los state verbs se pueden dividir en varios grupos:

3. Verbos relacionados con la posesión (belong, own, have / have got (= possess), possess)

4. Verbos relacionados con los sentidos (hear, see, taste, smell, sound)

Listen to, Watch and Look, aunque hagan referencia a los sentidos, no son stative verbs y, por tanto, pueden ir en tiempos continuos.

5. Otros verbos (contain, cost, deserve, seem / look, look like, matter, weigh, measure, appear, need, depend on, owe, mind, lack, recognise, promise, involve, fit)

Cuidado

The picture measures 25 cm x 15 cm. (el cuadro mide 25 cm x 15 cm) = stative meaning
Peter is in the kitchen measuring the table (Peter está en la cocina midiendo la mesa) = active meaning

I think that is a good idea (creo que es una buena idea) = stative meaning
I am thinking about going to the beach this afternoon (estoy considerando ir a la playa esta tarde) = active meaning

John is a funny person (John es una persona graciosa) = stative meaning
John is being funny (john está (siendo) gracioso) = active meaning

The train arrives at 6 (el tren llega a las 6)

The film starts at 7 o’clock (la película empieza a las 7)
The football match ends at 11p.m (el partido de fútbol acaba a las 11 de la noche)

2. BE + Infinitivo
El verbo to be en presente simple (am / is / are) seguido de infinitivo se usa para expresar planes formales u órdenes oficiales que hagan referencia al futuro:

Plan formal → The President is to visit China next week (el presidente va a visitar China la semana que viene)

Órden → Students who have finished their homework are to meet at 10 o’clock outside the main door.

3. En frases que hablen del futuro en las que aparezca when, until, as soon as.

I won't talk to you until you apologize (no te hablaré hasta que no te disculpes)
I'll phone him as soon as I finish my homework (le llamaré en cuanto acabe los deberes)

4. BE ABOUT TO + Infinitivo
